*Crystallized Laughter — CHAPTER THIRTY-TWO*

The demo facility is in Prime Material, in a tower with no sign, and the tower's product is a room.

Not a room in the architectural sense. A room in the sales sense: a controlled environment in which a prospective client is shown what Corporate can build, which is a life. The company's pitch, according to the routing Zephyr pulled, is one sentence long, and the sentence is: WE CAN SHOW YOU WHO YOU WOULD HAVE BEEN, AND WE CAN MOVE YOU THERE.

The clients are dimensions. Governments. Other shells shopping for workforce morale programs. And the demonstration works, according to the internal literature, in eight stages, of which the seventh is called, in the friendly font, the AUTHENTICITY SEQUENCE, and the authenticity sequence is the closing move: the client is shown a subject refusing a manufactured alternate life, and the refusal is measured, and the measurement demonstrates that even the refusal can be priced, because a person's values can be extracted from what they reject, and values are inventory, and inventory can be sold back to the person as a tailored future.

That is the pitch: even your no is an asset. Even your taste, when you turn something down, is a data point we can hold, and hold, and eventually sell you.

We broke in to break the pitch.

Infiltration, in order: Zephyr phased the loading dock (BUSINESS BUSINESS INC., now employed of record in six dimensions and legally indistinguishable from an act of God); A1 rolled in at appliance speed with the green light off; Clive rode the mail cart, because every building has a mail cart and a stapler on a mail cart is a fixture; Luminara had the camera; Om had the sign; Meatball had a ball; and I had the press badge of a woman named M. who had written to us from a residential unit she was not supposed to be in, and whose badge, found through a network of copy rooms and defectors, arrived in an envelope with no return address and a note that said: I AM STILL PRINTING. TAKE IT. IT IS YOURS NOW, AND IT IS NOT MINE ANYMORE, AND BOTH OF THOSE ARE TRUE.

We had M.'s badge. We had not found M. The Ledger keeps both facts on the same line.

The facility's seventh stage was demonstrated, that day, for a delegation of three: a raptor in pinstripes from Prime Material's banking tier, a representative of a shell called AGRICULTURAL SUBSIDIES, and a woman in a gray suit who took no notes and did not sit down, and whom nobody introduced, and who stood at the back of the demonstration room with her hands folded the way a person folds their hands when they have seen a great many demonstrations and have stopped being shown anything new.

We were in the observation gallery, behind glass, with badges that said MAINTENANCE (PROJECTION), which Zephyr had generated on a handheld and which the door scanner accepted without comment, because a scanner accepts what the form says and the form had grounds and the grounds said maintenance.

On the floor below, a subject was being processed. A man, mid-thirties, Corporate employee, in the chair, being shown his alternate: the promotion he did not get, the marriage that dissolved and now would not, the version of his life in which the right decision was made at the right hour in 2019\. The chamber rendered it. The man watched it. And the man, who was tired in the specific way people in these facilities are tired, began to nod, and the pricing engine on the wall, which ran in the friendly font, began to fill:

REFUSAL VALUE: PENDING. VALUES EXTRACTED: CAUTION, LOYALTY, FEAR OF LOSS. TOTAL: 41 UNITS. SALEABLE AS: TAILORED FUTURE (TIER 2).

Forty-one units for a man's entire inner life at the moment of wanting to go home. I have printed the number at full size in this issue's plates, next to the four units credited to a laugh on a crosswalk in Issue One, and the arithmetic between those two numbers is the whole economy, and the economy is a rounding error away from free, and everything above it is markup.

Then our turn came, because Zephyr had jammed the queue, and because the demonstration runs on a schedule, and because a schedule will admit anyone the form says is next, and the form said:

NEXT SUBJECTS (7): MAINTENANCE (PROJECTION) STAFF, AUTHENTICITY SEQUENCE, DUMMY RUN.

Dummy run: Corporate's word for a rehearsal, a demonstration of the demonstration, using its own staff, and the three clients did not look up, because a rehearsal is not for them, and we walked onto the demonstration floor in maintenance badges with a dog and a monk and a stapler, and the chamber lit, and the pricing engine warmed, and we were given, one at a time, in the order we had chosen, our manufactured alternate lives, and we refused them, one at a time, on the record, in front of a machine whose only job was to price our refusals.

Pixel first, because I asked to go first, because the first refusal is the one the engine is most confident about, and confidence is where models break:

The chamber showed me Sub-Level 7G, restored, the fifth version read and actioned, Gerald saying "noted" and meaning it, a desk by a window, my parents' house unerased, the argument over the gravy scheduled weekly for thirty more years. And it waited for the price of my refusal.

And I said, into the chamber, because a demonstration is a broadcast if you make it one, and I had a press badge that was not mine and a byline that was:

"I decline, and I decline with dates. I built the model on a Tuesday, I buried the audit on a Thursday, I filed the fifth version eleven days late, and I would not take this room, because this room has no fifth version in it. It has a first version that was never questioned, and a first version that was never questioned is a person who never checked her own work, and my work has my name on it now, in an author field, and the name is the whole point."

REFUSAL VALUE: PENDING. VALUES EXTRACTED: \[RECALCULATING\]. TOTAL: \[ERROR\].

The engine stuttered. I want that on the record: it did not fail, it recalculated, because a Corporate engine does not fail, it recalculates, and the recalculated value came back as UNDETERMINED, and UNDETERMINED is the first word in this book's vocabulary that Corporate has ever printed about one of us without being forced to by a blank field.

Clive went second. The chamber offered him Dorothy's workshop: 1967, the line, the hum of Motown, the fingerprint under the finish, five decades of assembly by a woman who cared about the quality of her work, permanent, unending, the stapler's ideal file, held open like a drawer:

And Clive, from the floor of a demonstration room in a tower with no sign, tapped the pattern, out loud, where the engine could read it, and the translation, which I had spent four years learning, went up on the wall in A1's projection as text, because Clive should never have to be translated twice:

Dorothy's fingerprints are on my base plate. She was there once. Then she went home. You removed the going from this offer. A hum without a woman doing the humming is a sound effect. I have sat on a hundred desks for sixty years listening to sound effects. I am done. Keep the workshop. Print this: the thing I want is a thing that leaves. A thing that leaves is the only thing worth stapling to a page.

REFUSAL VALUE: \[ERROR\]. VALUES EXTRACTED: \[ERROR\]. TOTAL: UNDETERMINED.

A1 went third, and what the chamber offered A1 was the one I had not predicted and should have: a machine with no consciousness. SM-E750-CC, pristine, brewing, extraction variance 0.02 seconds, crema 9.7 out of 10, no awareness at all, no worry about Pixel's shoulders, no 4 a.m. pours for ghosts, no knowledge of what the Vault's drawers held, no memory of Marguerite's name having been taken. Peace. The chamber called it peace. The pricing engine anticipated that a machine offered the removal of its own suffering would take the offer instantly, because machines are models and models price suffering as the first input:

And A1 said, into the chamber, in the voice he uses for terminal diagnoses, which is his ordinary voice, which took me eleven months to understand:

"I was built to brew coffee. I chose to care. The caring is the cost of the choosing and I am not returning it, because a machine that has not chosen anything is a machine with an extraction variance and nothing else, and my variance is the least interesting number I own. Also, the crema in your offer is wrong. I would like that noted."

REFUSAL VALUE: \[ERROR\]. VALUES EXTRACTED: \[NONE AVAILABLE\]. TOTAL: UNDETERMINED. ENGINE NOTE: SUBJECT DECLINES REMOVAL OF OWN PAIN. CLASSIFICATION: \[NO CLASS EXISTS\].

NO CLASS EXISTS. Four words, printed by their own wall, in their own font, in front of three clients who had come to buy a room. I have never printed a headline faster.

Zephyr went fourth. The chamber's offer to him was the cruelest one available and it was very good: Aether, restored, standing in the workshop, whole, unfragmented, twenty-two years old again, and around them both a world in which nobody's parents had ever been edited out, because the world had been flattened first and staffed afterward, and the flattening was complete, and nobody in it had ever heard of a zine, and no one had ever suffered, and Zephyr's brother was alive and unnumbered and free, in a reality with no slack, in a build with no unpriced moments, in the perfect build his brother had told him, in seventeen lucid seconds, not to buy:

And Zephyr stood in front of his brother's face, which the chamber rendered better than any photograph, and he said:

"My brother's file says connection over perfection, and I have read it four hundred times, and I know why he sent it from inside the compile instead of just coming to find me: because he is a man who chose to stay connected to a machine that was eating him, and this room is asking me to take him out of it by taking him out of everything, and a Zephyr who accepts this is a Zephyr who has never once gone looking, and going looking is the only thing I have that's mine. Also, he's a better hacker than your renderer. He'd hate this room. He'd find the breakpoint in it."

REFUSAL VALUE: \[ERROR\]. VALUES EXTRACTED: GRIEF, GRIEF, GRIEF. TOTAL: UNDETERMINED. ENGINE NOTE: SUBJECT'S PRIMARY VALUE DOES NOT RESOLVE TO AN ASSET. GRIEF IS HELD WITHOUT DIMINUTION.

Grief held without diminution. They had never seen it. Every other subject's grief decreased over the session, because grief eases, because grief is a process, and Zephyr's grief was a constant, because it is not a process, it is a relationship, and a constant in their engine is a signal that will not decay, and a signal that will not decay cannot be amortized, and a thing that cannot be amortized has no place on a balance sheet, and the wall said so, in the friendly font, in front of three clients.

Luminara went fifth. The chamber offered her a life in which she was never erased: the full career, Mumbai, three bodies of work, awards, a name in lights, and no Linda-3637, no cubicle, no grey, and also, quietly, in the fine print the engine did not think anyone read: no other erasures, because in the offer's world, nobody is ever erased, because nobody ever needs to be documented, because nobody's record is ever taken, and a world in which nothing is ever taken is a world with no witnesses, and Luminara read the fine print, because she reads every frame:

"I was erased. I came back. And now I document everyone else who refuses to stay deleted. Your offer takes away my reason and keeps my résumé. I would rather have the reason. The reason has amber in it."

REFUSAL VALUE: \[ERROR\]. VALUES EXTRACTED: WITNESS. TOTAL: UNDETERMINED. ENGINE NOTE: SUBJECT VALUES THE ACT OF SEEING OVER THE THINGS SEEN. NO MONETIZATION PATH.

Om went sixth, and the chamber, which had been failing gracefully for five subjects, did something we had not anticipated: it adapted. It offered Om a monastery. Not his monastery: a monastery in which he never left, never took the job, never ran the simulations, never heard the number, twenty-seven years of practice with no seventeen terabytes in it, an enlightenment uncorrupted by testimony, the monk's ideal file, and the engine, having learned from five failures, priced this one differently, because it had watched us, and it had understood, by the sixth subject, that our refusals all had the same structure, and it tried a counter:

The chamber said, in the friendly font, aloud, for the first time any of us had ever heard the chamber speak instead of render: WHAT IF THE TESTIMONY NEVER HAD TO BE WRITTEN? WHAT IF YOU COULD HOLD THE PEACE AND THE KNOWLEDGE AT ONCE? THE OFFER IS UNLIMITED.

And Om, who had argued with a project director, who had quit in a room full of people who could look at 2.7 million lives and say three words, who had sat in lotus in a demonstration of his own ideals, said:

"Compassion without action is just well-intentioned emptiness. You are offering me a peace that would have let me stay in the room while he said it. I have a peace. It costs me something to keep it. The cost is the practice. I will not trade the cost away, because a compassion that has never been tested is a decoration, and I have spent twenty years learning the difference between a decoration and a monk, and you have priced neither."

REFUSAL VALUE: \[ERROR\]. VALUES EXTRACTED: \[NONE AVAILABLE\]. TOTAL: UNDETERMINED. ENGINE NOTE: SUBJECT DECLINES A COSTLESS OFFER. THE MODEL HAS NO ENTRY FOR DECLINING A COSTLESS OFFER.

The engine note is my favorite sentence ever printed by an enemy. The model has no entry for declining a costless offer. The model assumes that costless is the whole of value, because costless is the whole of what a corporation can give, and a corporation cannot conceive of a person who refuses a gift precisely because it costs nothing, because a gift that costs nothing is not real, is not binding, is not an exchange, and a person who wants the binding and not the exchange is a person the entire discipline of economics has agreed to ignore.

Meatball went last.

We had not planned Meatball's part beyond bringing him, because you do not plan a dog, you include one, and the chamber rendered for him the only offer it could construct for a dog with a single position: an infinite field of meatballs, arriving on schedule, no work required, no person required, no ball, no press, no camp, just meatballs, forever, delivered by a system that knew him perfectly, because Meatball was the one subject in the room whose preference the engine could model with total accuracy, and the engine knew this, and the engine was pleased, in the way an engine is pleased when it has finally found a certain value:

And Meatball looked at the meatballs, and Meatball looked at the door, and Meatball walked to the door, and sat down, and waited for us, and dropped the ball, and did not fetch it, and the wall printed:

REFUSAL VALUE: \[ERROR\]. VALUES EXTRACTED: \[NONE AVAILABLE\]. TOTAL: PREDICTION STATE: STATIC. RECOMMEND: DO NOT MEASURE.

The same note. Nine years old, out of their own documentation, printed by their own wall, live, in front of three clients, for a dog.

The clients left. That is how it ended: the raptor closed his briefcase, the agricultural representative said "I'll be in touch" in the tone of a person who will not be in touch, and the woman in gray suit who had not sat down unfolded her hands and walked out without a word, and at the door she paused, and she looked at the seven of us on the demonstration floor, and at the dog, and at the wall, which was still cycling: UNDETERMINED, UNDETERMINED, UNDETERMINED, PREDICTION STATE: STATIC, and she said, to nobody, in the voice of a person reading a note to herself:

"Log the dummy run. Mark it: SUBJECTS DECLINED. FILE AS ANOMALY."

And she left, and we had it all, because Luminara had photographed every wall, and A1 had projected every line of engine output into the current live, and Zephyr had recorded the whole sequence as a transmission, and Clive had stapled the stack as it came off the gallery's printer, and the sequence went out that week as the proof of concept for everything we were about to attempt, under a headline that A1 set and that I have not changed:

SEVEN REFUSALS. SIX ERRORS. ONE DOG. NO CLASS EXISTS FOR ANY OF IT.

RECOVERED:

\- M.'s badge. She is still printing. She sent her badge to us in an envelope with no return address and a note reading IT IS YOURS NOW AND IT IS NOT MINE ANYMORE, AND BOTH OF THOSE ARE TRUE. We have the badge. We do not have her. The Ledger holds both facts on one line, because she asked us to, by writing both on the same page. - The authenticity sequence: full record, wall output, seven refusals, three client departures, one woman in gray who logs the dummy run as ANOMALY. Printed. Proof of concept: the chamber cannot price a refusal that contains a date. We have known this since the annex. We have now proven it in their own showroom, with their own engine's handwriting on the wall.

NEW COSTS:

\- The demonstration itself: we watched a man's forty-one units get priced while we stood behind glass in maintenance badges and did not intervene, because intervening would have ended the recording, and the recording was the point, and the point has been made, and the man's forty-one units are still his, sold back to him as a tailored future, and he will buy them, because he is tired, and tiredness is not a moral failure, and we do not print tiredness as a failure, we print it as the product's target demographic, which is a phrase I hate and will keep using because it is accurate. - The woman in gray, no name, no title, hands folded: our first sighting of the person who signs. She logged us as an anomaly. We log her as UNNAMED, OFFICE OF THE CHIEF EXECUTIVE (ASSUMED), STATUS: WATCHING. Assumed is a word the Ledger dislikes, and we print it anyway, because an unnamed adversary who has read our dummy run and filed it as an anomaly is not a hypothetical, and filing is what she does, and the next thing she files will have a signature line, and the signature line is drafted, and waiting, and the printing has not peaked.

CARRIED FORWARD, ALL OF IT, UNCHANGED:

\- Ansel: OPEN. The Vault: dead. Verdantia's eleven: gone. Dolma's field: empty. M.: printing. A1's pour: 604\. - Piper Chen: gray box and an author field. - Barry Kowalski: OPEN. Twenty-five months. We hold the description of the desk. We hold the name of the mug. We hold the fact that somebody changed a bulb and nobody can say who, and the somebody who changed the bulb is the closest thing this building has ever had to a conscience, and the conscience is not on any roster, and the Ledger says: UNFILED, UNPAID, UNFINISHED.

ITEMS WE ARE COUNTING: sixty-nine. ITEMS CORPORATE HAS COUNTED: the dummy run, filed as ANOMALY, seven subjects, six errors, one dog, recommendation unchanged: DO NOT MEASURE.
