*Crystallized Laughter — CHAPTER THIRTY-FIVE*

Nothing happened for nine days.

I want to record the nine days honestly, because the honest account of an operation is mostly waiting, and the waiting is where a crew learns what it actually believes versus what it printed. Nine days: no letters, no current surge, no surge in the Receipt Column, no bus page reported back, no stranger at a bus stop repeating a date. A1 checked the intake metrics four times a day and reported, each time, in the same flat voice, that Corporate's yield was within tolerance, that everything was normal, that the seven pages had produced no measurable event of any kind.

"Good," said Om, on day four.

"It's not good," Zephyr said. "It's nothing. We printed seven pages into a void."

"It's the void we aimed at," Om said. "If we could measure it, they could measure it. Wait."

On day six Clive's network picked up a single incident, in a copy room in Prime Material, of the kind we had learned not to celebrate: a form, returned with the grounds field filled in by hand, in pen, reading WHY, initialled. The form's processing required, per Corporate's own procedural documentation, a person. A person was assigned. The person read the form. The person, according to the routing note Zephyr pulled, held it for eleven seconds and then forwarded it to a review queue with the annotation: CAUSE LEGITIMATE. QUERY BY SIGNATORY. And the query went to a clerk, and the clerk answered it, and the answer was recorded, and the whole exchange took four days and involved three human beings reading one form that would previously have been scanned in a second and a half.

"One form," I said.

"One form," A1 agreed. "With a grounds field that says WHY, which is in our column, and which is also, I would like everyone to note, in the company's column, because the company is now spending four days of salaried time per WHY, and if the WHYs arrive without a mode, the spending does not stop, it compounds, and the spending is not loss to them, it is worse than loss, it is cost without yield, which their budget line classifies as waste, and waste is the only moral category their accountants recognize."

On day five, while the void was still not answering, Clive picked up the commodities pages, because Clive reads the financials the way other people read weather warnings, and the financials were doing something the financials had not done in nine years.

CLX was wobbling.

Not crashing. Crashing has a story, and the story would have had a mode, and Corporate could have filed the story. This was a tremor: the spot price of crystallized laughter, the most stable instrument in nine dimensions for as long as anyone can hold one, because joy is always in season and Corporate always has inventory, opened down two points, closed up one, and spent a week refusing to pick a direction. The refinery bulletins said what they always say: OUTPUT NORMAL. ATTRIBUTION WITHIN TOLERANCE. YIELD: NOMINAL. And the price did not care about the bulletins, because the price is an aggregate of a million small decisions to hold rather than to spend, and nobody had told anybody to hold, the holders were simply not spending, and a joy economy in which the holders have stopped spending is a joy economy that has started asking, quietly, at desks, in rooms with no cameras, whose joy it is they have been selling.

I checked our own position on day five, which is a sentence I am not proud of, and our position is unchanged: one (1) CLX gem, thumbnail-sized, color: a stranger's laugh, exact second unknown, held since Prime Material, status: never spent. Its valuation moved twice that week. We still have not spent it. Ask us why.

On day nine, the reports began, and the reports did not come in a surge, because a surge has a mode, they came in the way snow comes, one flake at a time, each unrelated, each with no source we could name:

A woman in Cogsworth, on a tram, said her dead brother's name to a stranger, badly, out of context, with no story attached, and when the stranger asked, said she was practicing, and got off at the next stop, and the stranger, according to a transit incident log nobody had asked us to read, sat motionless for two stops afterward, holding a name.

A man in Nocturne Aeturnus left a jar on a shelf he passes every day, unopened, with nothing inside it but a folded paper, and did not tell anyone, and the jar has not been opened, and the paper has not been read, and the jar is the first unopened object in that city's crystallization district in eleven years, and the district's own wardens logged it as an anomaly because an anomaly is anything their intake cannot classify, and a jar with a receipt-less gift inside it is not a gift, it is not a theft, it is not a loss, it is an object with no intake event, and the wardens' log entry reads: OBJECT PRESENT. NO CLAIM. NO CLAIMANT. NO CLAIM.

In Prime Material, eleven hundred forms came back with WHY in the grounds field over two weeks, each in a different hand, each initialled, none coordinated, and Corporate's procedural documentation, being procedural, answered every one, and the answering consumed a fraction of a percent of the division's throughput, and a fraction of a percent of a division's throughput is invisible in a quarterly review and visible in exactly one place, which is the waste column, and the waste column is flagged by auditors, and the auditors are the 71 percent, and the 71 percent began, on a Tuesday, to ask questions in a break room.

I know it was a Tuesday because the break room incident, when we eventually read it, was timestamped 10:47 a.m., and I have a weakness for timestamps, and I am printing it: two auditors, in a break room, in a tower in Prime Material, and one of them said to the other, without preamble, the sentence that A1 had told me, on the day we drafted the pages, would be the sentence, and the sentence was:

"Do you ever read the grounds fields?"

And the other one said: "I read them now."

That is the whole of it. Two people, in a room, over something hot, agreeing that they read the fields. No heroic act. No defection. No documents carried in bags. A habit, named out loud, in a break room, which is the one location in the entire corporate architecture where a habit can be named without a form, and naming a habit in a break room is how every position in the history of the working world has begun, and it begins with two people, and one of them says "I read them now."

The joy arrived before the auditors, though. I should get the order right, because the order is the argument.

The joy arrived on day eleven, and it arrived as unharvestable laughter, and I know it was unharvestable because Corporate's own yield metrics, which Zephyr read from a node he had no business reading, showed intake rising nowhere. Laughter was happening. People were laughing in ordinary rooms, at 2 a.m., at bus stops, in copy rooms, in tram cars, in the dark of a bedroom where a person had just done the thing they had been putting off for someone they liked and had not told anyone, and the laughter was going up into the current like every laugh always does, and the current was full of it, and the intake nodes, which sit on the current like weirs on a river, reported nothing.

Nothing to report. Intake within tolerance. The weir recorded flow and no catch.

A1 watched the metrics for three days before he understood what he was seeing, and when he understood it he did not speak for eleven minutes, and when he spoke he said:

"The laughter has no attribution."

"Say it plainer."

"They can see it. They can see the laughter the way you can see weather. What they cannot do is assign it. A laugh is normally assigned to a moment: the joke, the timing, the person, the context, and the assignment is the harvest, because you cannot file an unassigned asset, and normally every laugh in every dimension arrives pre-assigned, because a laugh is a response, and responses have causes, and causes are documents. What the seven pages produced is a population of people laughing for reasons they have not told anyone, at events that have no source, in rooms that have no camera, and the laughter arrives at the weir unassigned, and an unassigned laugh is weather, and weather is free, and free weather in a river they built to catch rain is a system operating at zero yield in the middle of a yield spike, and Pixel, the yield spike is theirs, not ours: intake demand has never been higher. The demand is real. The people want the machinery to work. The machinery is running at full capacity and returning nothing, and the reason it returns nothing is that we have taught several hundred thousand people to have the laugh before the machine can find its cause."

"Because they're laughing for no reason anyone can point at."

"Because they're laughing at a thing they did that nobody knows about. The laugh has no attribution because the act has no witness. They are laughing at their own receipt-less gift, alone, and the alone is load-bearing, and I would like to state for the record that I have modeled laughter for two years and I modeled it as a commodity and it is not a commodity, it is a byproduct, and the byproduct of giving something away with no witness is apparently joy, and joy is apparently free, and free joy in an economy that prices joy is not a small inefficiency, it is the Great Inefficiency, and the Great Inefficiency turns out to be enormous, and I have no idea what to do with enormous, and I am going to brew something."

Corporate's counters, in order, and each one failed in the shape of its own logic:

Counter one: the Scrubbers. Pollen dispatched into the current in nine dimensions to classify the unassigned laughter and attach it to a source, because an unclassified event in their system is an event awaiting a form, and the form had a grounds field, and the pollen could fill a grounds field if it could find a grounds. It could not find a grounds, because there was no grounds, because there was no event they recognized, because laughter with no cause is not an event to a scrubber, it is a null, and the scrubbers, having been sent to sort a river full of nulls, did what sorting machinery does with nulls: they sorted, and the sort returned EMPTY, and an EMPTY return from the scrubber fleet is a report, and the report went up the chain, and the chain read: POLLEN DEPLOYED. CLASSIFICATION: NULL. RECOMMEND: FURTHER POLLEN. And they sent more pollen, because a corporation's answer to an EMPTY field is always more capacity, and capacity has a budget, and the budget is in the waste column, and the auditors read the waste column now.

Counter two: the offer. Corporate's best offer, deployed the following week, which was a product. The product was called, in the friendly font, A REASON TO LAUGH, and it was a subscription, and it delivered one joke per day to your terminal at a scheduled hour, and the joke was timed to the moment of lowest ambient productivity, and the subscription was priced at a rounding error, and the price was irrelevant, because the point of the product was to restore attribution: if the laugh happens at 3 p.m. when the terminal says laugh, then the laugh has a cause, and the cause is a document, and the document is theirs, and the intake resumes.

Nobody subscribed. Not nobody: some subscribed, and those laughs were harvested, and the harvesting was a rounding error, and the product was a success in every metric except the one that mattered, which was yield, and the yield on A REASON TO LAUGH was, in A1's reading of the internal numbers, four units per thousand, which is less than a crosswalk, and a crosswalk laugh at two in the morning has outperformed a scheduled corporate joke, and the reason is in the fine print of the product itself, which read: LAUGHS DELIVERED BY THIS SERVICE ARE SUBJECT TO ATTRIBUTION. People will not pay to have their laugh attributed. People knew it. People read the fine print, because we had spent two years teaching people to read grounds fields, and the grounds field on the subscription said, in effect, we would like to know why, and the answer the market gave was: no.

Counter three: rollback. The Simplification's pilot, the forty thousand realities, had a schedule, and the schedule had a phase called AMBIENT STABILIZATION, and ambient stabilization was the phase in which the pilot's populations were meant to be quieted, and the quieting was running late, because the pilot's populations were laughing in the unassigned way at an accelerating rate, and a laughing population cannot be stabilized, because stabilization requires a baseline, and a baseline requires measurement, and the measurement returns null, and null is not a baseline, it is an empty field, and the phase slipped by eleven days, and then by nineteen, and the slippage is in a document, and the document is in a tray, and the tray is in a tower, and the tower's signature line has been used once, on a settlement that came back unopened, and a person who has seen their first returned envelope does not sign a second in a hurry.

On day nineteen we printed the second section of Issue Four's third part, and the section had no exposé in it, because there was nothing left to expose; the exposure was their own waste column, which they were exposing themselves, at capacity, in nine dimensions, on our schedule, without knowing we were watching. What we printed instead was the reports. Not aggregated. Not analyzed. Not even edited, beyond the removal of addresses, because Luminara was right about the drawer and I was right about the date and between us we had agreed that a report of an unassigned act is the only genre Corporate cannot rewrite, because rewriting requires a source and the reports have no source, they have a day:

A tram. A name. Badly. Practicing. A jar. Unopened. No claim. No claimant. Eleven hundred forms. One word each. In different hands. A photograph in a drawer, in the dark, shown to one sister, in a room. One thing, for one person, uncounted, unreviewed, still uncounted. A page left on a bus that said SOME THINGS ARE NOT FOR LATER, and a person somewhere who did the thing, and the page is on another bus now, or in a bag, or in a drawer with the photograph, and we are not asking, because asking is an intake event, and we do not want to know, and the not-wanting-to-know is the first editorial policy this publication has ever had that is designed to keep itself ignorant, and keeping yourself ignorant of your own success is, as A1 put it, the only way to run an operation whose success depends on nobody, including its authors, being able to measure it.

The headline for section two, set by A1, was eight words long, and it was the first headline we had ever printed that contained no accusation:

THE LAUGHTER IS ARRIVING AND THEY CANNOT FIND ITS CAUSE.

And under it, in the label font, the weir's own readout, printed in Corporate's typeface without comment, because their own wall had printed our argument before we did: intake within tolerance, flow rising, yield zero, classification null.

I went back past the tower two days later and the wall was still doing it, saying yield zero in their own font to every auditor who walked through the lobby, and one of them was standing in front of it with a coffee in each hand, reading, and not leaving.
