*Crystallized Laughter — CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT*

It started with the weir.

The weir is where the current leaves the valley, and it carries a board of gauges we did not build and could not have repaired, installed by people who meter for a living and abandoned the way everything on unowned ground gets abandoned: logged once, then left. For nineteen days those gauges read what gauges read when a river is doing what a river does. At six minutes and twelve seconds past six on the morning of the ninth day, the flow gauge went backward.

Not far. Not dramatically. Backward the way a held breath goes backward. Then the second gauge, then the fourth, and the pressure board at the far end, which had climbed in a straight line for as long as we had camped at the mouth of the current, went flat and stayed flat. The strip is still pinned up in the press room, and it is the only document in this book that nobody wrote.

A1 noticed it first, because A1 was the only member of this crew who monitored their intake metrics for pleasure, and at 6:12 a.m. on the ninth day, three hours into a day that was supposed to end us, he said the sentence that opened the last act of this publication:

"The yield is negative."

"Negative yield," I said. "Explain it like I'm a person who was awake for all of yesterday."

"Yield is what they take, minus what it costs them to take it. For eleven months the number has been positive, and the positivity is the company. Right now, at 6:12 in the morning, in nine dimensions, the number is negative, which means the taking costs more than the taking returns, and there is only one mechanism I have ever seen produce a negative yield in a system with a valve, and the mechanism is return."

"Return of what?"

"Of what was taken. Not from a person. From the pipeline." He pulsed, model-converging, twice. "Pixel, the Simplification's pilot was built to pave the river: classify nothing, meter everything, run the current through a pipe so that no laugh arrives unassigned because no laugh arrives unexamined. The pipe has been their design goal for nine years. The pipe has never run, because the pilot never got its forty thousand realities quiet enough to seal, and the sealing requires the valley's valve to be scheduled, and the valve's grounds were the thing that stopped the schedule, and while the valve held, the pipe stayed open at the mouth, and an open mouth is a river, and a river carries what it is given."

"What is it being given now?"

"Everything they ever took out of it."

That landed on the table the way a number lands when everybody in the room already knows it and nobody has said it. Clive set down the mug he had been holding without drinking from it. Om said nothing, which is the monk's version of a shout. Zephyr put his hands flat on the deck like a man steadying a thing that might bolt. Luminara had the camera up before the sentence finished, and she did not take a frame, because she said later there was nothing to frame yet; the faces were waiting on the rest of it.

The accounting, which A1 assembled over the following hour from metrics that Corporate was by then too busy to hide, had been accumulating for years and released in a single morning: every laugh removed from a mouth with a receipt attached, every hour billed out of a week, every name read off a person and filed, every dream catalogued at rung four, every unit of rung five's time, all of it taken with attribution, all of it held in the pipeline's pressure, all of it waiting for a moment of no load, and the moment of no load was the ninth day, because the forced measurement that was supposed to take the valley had arrived at an EMPTY confirmation field, and a system that has authorized an operation and cannot execute it does what every system does when the operation stalls mid-sequence: it releases the buffer.

The buffer released into the river, and the river was not theirs anymore, because the river's grounds were a man who had been a person for seventeen seconds, and a river with a person for grounds does not route through a pipe, and the stolen joy, arriving unclaimed at the mouth of a current at 6:12 in the morning in nine dimensions, did the only thing unclaimed joy has ever done, which is flood back toward whoever had it last:

Not the company. The company cannot hold joy; joy with a receipt goes to the receipt's holder, and the receipts were eleven million of them, and the joy went to the holders, and people in Prime Material woke at 6:12 a.m. laughing, and the laughing had no cause, and the laughing was not the seven pages' laughing, which was given freely, it was return, and return is louder than giving, because return has a source, and the source is the thing they took, and everyone who woke laughing had, for one morning, the exact unassigned unit that had been billed out of their week in, according to A1's reconstruction, 2019.

I will describe one morning of it, because I only have one, and the rest I have as dispatches.

At 6:12 a shift queue in Prime Material laughed. A woman who goes in early went in early, and nothing happened, and she laughed, and the man ahead of her turned around to catch the rest of it, and there was no rest, and he turned back, and she laughed until she had to put a hand on the rail, and nobody had told her a joke, and nobody was going to, because there was no source for it in the building and no author for it on any form, and she had it back, that is all, she had it back.

In a break room in another dimension a man set down his tray and laughed until he had to put a hand on the table, and his supervisor asked what was funny, and he said he did not know, and the supervisor wrote that down, because supervisors write things down, and the sentence he wrote was: DOES NOT KNOW.

By seven the streets had it. By eight it was in the dispatches, and the dispatches were unlike anything our mail had carried, because these were not reports of harm, and we did not know what to file them under, and A1 said, "File them under returned."

In Cogsworth the clockworks jammed, which is the sentence I never expected to write: eleven million crystallized emotions in the Cogsworth Cogitarium's holds, catalogued, appraised, shelfed, all of them taken with attribution, all of them in the pipeline's pressure, and the buffer release hit the Cogitarium's intake in a single hour, and the intake is a sorting mechanism, and a sorting mechanism given nineteen years of unsorted joy in one hour does what Clive had predicted it would do, in the only joke he made that week:

It does what a desk does when you hand it sixty years of stapled paper at once, kid. It holds. Then the drawer breaks. The drawer is going to break. The question is what's in the drawer when it does.

For about an hour and a half the Cogitarium did what Clive said a desk does: it held. The intake sorted. The belts ran their schedules. The buffer came in against a mechanism built to receive one emotion at a time with its paperwork, and the mechanism did what it is designed to do with anything unaccounted for, which is hold it in the queue until the queue can be resolved, and the queue grew, and it grew in a building whose every wall is a filing cabinet, and by eleven the queue had stopped moving and the sorters had stopped sorting and the staff stood in the aisles with their scanners pointed at a conveyor that had become, for the first time in its operating history, simply full.

Nobody broke it. That is the part worth printing. Nothing struck the Cogitarium and nothing sabotaged it and nobody was inside it. It filled.

The drawer broke at 11:47 a.m. In the crystallization district of Nocturne Aeturnus, the shelves released, and the release was not an explosion, it was a thaw, and the thaw returned nineteen years of catalogued laughter to the air of a city that had not heard unpriced laughter in a generation, and the sound, according to the dispatches we received over the following days from readers who had never written to us before, was audible from four districts away, and the wardens, whose entire job is classification, stood in the street with their logs and could not fill them, because the event had no intake, because the joy had a prior owner and the prior owner was everybody, and an ownerless event in a classification system is a null, and the nulls arrived in the wardens' reports like snow, and one warden, in a report Zephyr pulled, wrote the only sentence in the history of that district's enforcement that reads like our pages:

RETURNED TO SOURCE. NO CLAIM. NO CLAIMANT. NO CLAIM.

The same three words the jar had produced. The same three words the entire grammar of this book has been building toward: no claim, no claimant, no claim. We printed them the first time as an anomaly and the second time as an instruction and the third time as a headline, and the headline for Issue Four's fifth section, which went to press at gray dawn on the tenth day, was not written by A1:

Luminara set it. Once, exactly, in the caption font she uses for frames she refuses to let me touch, and the headline was:

EVERYTHING THEY TOOK, RETURNED, UNCLAIMED, AT 6:12 A.M. IN THE MORNING OF THE NINTH DAY. WE DID NOT DO THIS. THE VALVE DID. THE READERS DID. THE DOG DID. WE ONLY PRINTED IT.

The dispatches from Nocturne came in over four days, and I print two lines of the third one, because it is the only dispatch we have ever received that was written while the writer was still laughing and did not stop to edit: "It is nothing like the jars and nothing like the shows and nobody sold it. It is just arriving. Half the street is on the ground. The wardens have given up and one of them is sitting on the curb with his logbook open to a blank page and he is not writing and he is not leaving."

The enforcement record of that district on the ninth day: a blank page, held open, by a person who has been told to fill it and cannot.

Corporate's collapse is not a battle, and I am not going to write it as one, because it was not one; it was an audit, which is the only kind of ending their architecture permits, and the audit ran itself, because the auditors are the 71 percent, and the 71 percent had been reading grounds fields for three weeks, and on the ninth day the waste column did not spike, it inverted, and an inverted waste column in a corporation whose claim to legitimacy is accurate accounting is not a scandal, it is a solvent, and solvents dissolve:

The rollout order in the tower, with its EMPTY confirmation, was flagged by the company's own procedural documentation as an unexecuted authorization, and an unexecuted authorization requires a grounds field for the non-execution, and the grounds field was EMPTY, and an empty grounds field on an order signed by the chief executive is the exact document this publication has spent four issues teaching its readers to look for, and the readers, by the tenth day, were looking: eleven thousand of them, in nine dimensions, writing to the company's own compliance desks, in their own format, with the company's own forms, asking one question, and the question was the word WHY in a grounds field, in ten thousand different hands.

I have the forms. Field nine is where a query takes its grounds, and field nine is not a text field: it is a dropdown, with the company's own pre-approved reasons in it, and people wrote a word that was not on the list into the only place on the form that will not accept one. The desks processed what could be processed and escalated the rest, because an unanswered query with a grounds field requires an answer with a grounds field, and the only answer the company had was EMPTY, and EMPTY cannot be filed against WHY without amending EMPTY, and amending EMPTY would have meant saying why, and saying why was the one operation the architecture had no form for.

The shareholders, if a dimension of shell companies can be said to have shareholders, did what shareholders do when the waste column inverts and the flagship order has an empty field: they did not revolt, they reassigned. Business Business Inc. re-registered. Definitely Not Evil Mega-Corp (Trust Us) dissolved and re-formed as a smaller entity with the same staff and a new name that did not contain the word trust. Your Friends In Feelings LLC filed for what its own filing called TRANSITION OF USE, which is the company's oldest term, the term from Project Palimpsest, and the company had used it on residences and on names and on fields, and its own lawyers were now using it on the company, and a corporation undergoing a transition of use is a corporation that has run out of other people's ground fields and has begun eating its own, and the eating is legal, and the eating is quiet, and the eating is, by every measure this publication knows how to print, bankruptcy: not destruction, not vaporization, not justice, bankruptcy, the quietest failure available to an apex, a restructuring, a renaming, a signing of the same people under a shell that will itself be renamed in four years when the auditors, who have not stopped reading grounds fields, find the next empty one.

I keep coming back to the shape of the thing, because the shape is the argument. Everybody draws Corporate as a pyramid, including Corporate, and a pyramid is a structure where every level is a load on the level below it and the top is a load on nothing. For nine years the top had a product to stand on, which was the taking, and on the ninth day the taking went negative, and a top with no product under it is not a ruin, it is a weight with nothing beneath it, and the weight did what weights do: it came down through the levels in order, each one reporting to the one above it until there was no above it, and the last report the pyramid filed was addressed to nobody, and it was filed on time.

I want to be careful here, because this is where a lesser publication would print VICTORY, and victory is a mode, and a mode is inventory, and we have just spent nineteen days learning what happens to things with a mode:

Corporate was not destroyed. Corporate was audited by itself, into a smaller shape, having lost the pilot, the rollout, the word it wanted us to stop using (which it had appraised at the price of everything it owned and then failed to buy), the Cogitarium's catalogued holdings (returned to source, unclaimed), the pipeline's pressure (released at 6:12 a.m.), its chief executive's unexecuted order (flagged, EMPTY, in her own procedural documentation), and its yield model's foundational equation (superseded, withdrawn, my name still in the author field of the thing that superseded it, because a retraction we declined is a retraction that stays a confession).

What Corporate retained: its staff, its buildings, its shells, its friendly font, its procedural documentation, its auditors, its forms, and its appetite, and an organization that has lost its product and kept its appetite and its forms will rebuild a product, and the product will be a pipeline, and the pipeline will have a valve, and the valve will have grounds, and the grounds will be checked, by auditors who read grounds fields now, in break rooms, out loud, and the checking is not victory either, the checking is a habit, and a habit is a grounds field, and the whole of this war, when the Ledger is finally balanced, will have been fought over the question of whether a habit can outlast a company, and the answer, as of the tenth day, is that we do not know, and the not-knowing is printed at full size in Issue Four's fifth section, in the label font, in the box where other publications put their forecasts:

STATUS OF THE VICTORY: UNDETERMINED. MODEL HAS NO ENTRY. RECOMMEND: DO NOT MEASURE.

They had told us, nine years ago, about the dog: the measurement itself creates noise. We had printed their warning as a joke, and the joke had become a theorem, and the theorem had become a morning, and on the morning of the tenth day I stood at the mouth of the current with a press badge that was not mine and listened to a river whose grounds were a man, and I did not measure it, because measuring it would have made it an asset, and it is not an asset, and nothing in the valley is an asset, and that is the entire editorial position of this publication, arrived at after four issues and one hundred and sixteen thousand words, and it is four words long, and I did not set them, A1 did, and they ran on page one of Issue Four's fifth section above the fold:

THE LAUGHTER IS STILL ARRIVING.

And under it, in smaller type, the weir's readout, printed one last time, in their own typeface, because the last time a document argues for you should be the document of the person who argued against you:

YIELD: NEGATIVE. FLOW: RISING. CLASSIFICATION: \[REDACTED\]. OPERATOR: \[NONE AVAILABLE\].

The press ran until noon. The weir's board went on reading behind us the whole time, and the flow gauge has not returned to where it stood on the eighth day, and nobody has made it return, and when people ask me what the river sounds like now I tell them to go and stand at the mouth and find out, because that answer costs nothing and gives them the whole thing.

And that is where the morning ended: nobody measuring anything, the press running warm, and Meatball asleep in a room where nobody was counting.
